Fillers are very useful for the face. They are used to treat small areas of depressions to the nasolabial folds, to the marionette lines beneath the lower lip, as well as between the brows and it is useful in those areas, especially in conjunction with Botox, which paralyses the muscles that create those lines. The fillers are very easy to administer. I use a specific nerve block technique, much like a dental injection. I give a buffered solution of lidocaine under the lip on either side, upper and lower, which numbs the entire area of the face that is being injected, so these injections are painless. The fillers are useful for folds and lines and you can put them in deeper planes coming up to more superficial in each area depending on the need in that particular area. Juvederm and Restylane are hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is made synthetically by the companies. This lasts reportedly nine months or so about we have found that people are getting longer lasting results and this is thought to stimulate your own collagen and therefore people come in at maybe a year and say I think the material is still there, but it is more likely due to stimulation of your own collagen. Some people are not willing or in the mood to have an operation at this point and wants some freshening or improvement of loss of fullness of the face. Ageing changes, in addition to loosening of the skin and muscles and structures of the face, also cause loss of fullness of the face and I think loss of fullness is one of the big signs of ageing. For this reason, the fillers are very useful. Often people can be treated with fillers and Botox or just fillers alone and avoid surgery until later date.
