We perform a lot of facelift surgery in both men and women in this practice. I think there are very specific differences and different goals that we have with men and women. In women, I think it is really important to avoid so called telltale signs of plastic surgery or facelift surgery and this means not doing anything to move the hair that is in front of the ear, which is called the frontal tuft or sideburn if you will. It is also important to not dislodge the earlobe and to not close the incisions under tension. When this is done, you see people with tethered earlobes or with prominent scars and this is just a result of poor planning and techniques that are not as meticulous as they should be. The ageing changes in the face include laxity of the tissues, you lose elasticity in the skin and muscle and things tend to drop a little bit with gravity. After facelift surgery, the recovery is not as difficult as most people think. There is some swelling. There is minimal swelling and bruising though and the reason for that is meticulous careful technique in terms of hemostasis or preventing bleeding during the surgery. We use medicine during the surgery to prevent bleeding. We also use cautery in every area that looks like it might bleed afterwards and we then put a small little rubber drain on each side that usually stays for one or two days. It does not hurt. The patient is not aware of it and we remove it on the first or second postop day. Generally, people want to know when they are going to look presentable to be in public. If you have long hair that can cover the area of your ears, possibly at a week you can go out and no one will know that you had surgery but I generally have people plan on about two weeks of being out of commission.
