Liposuction
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure intended to help otherwise healthy patients remove the excess pockets of fat around their body's problem areas that they have not been able to eliminate through diet and exercise alone. Dr. Schwartz has been performing liposuction of the face, neck, and body using the "tumescent technique" since 1997. Liposuction is done so as to sculpt areas of the body, face and neck. I use the new SmartLipo™ laser liposuction technique which is a thin laser fiber that can be moved under the skin to facilitate fat removal, tighten skin, and aid in fine sculpting of small areas. This is a useful adjunct to standard liposuctioning techniques. Our SmartLipo™ technique can also be used in conjunction with a tummy tuck to improve the final results.
 During tumescent liposuction, which can be performed on both males and females alike, the patient is lightly sedated but awake and extremely comfortable. A dilute solution of anesthetic fluid is injected into the area to be treated, numbing the area and preventing bleeding. Dr. Schwartz then gently suctions excess fat from the region. There is very little pain involved during tumescent liposuction and, due to the lasting effect of the anesthetic solution, very little post-operative pain. Most patients require minimal pain medication following their liposuction procedure.
With tumescent liposuction, our Pasadena and Los Angeles patients are able to walk out of their procedure with no side effects from general anesthesia and resume their normal activities within days of treatment. In fact, most liposuction patients can resume normal walking the day of the procedure. SmartLipo™ Laser Liposuction Procedure
SmartLipo™ laser liposuction is a less invasive liposuction procedure that uses laser lipolysis to break open fat cells. The resulting fat is then removed through a tiny cannula. The remaining fat that is not suctioned out is not reabsorbed into the body, but is excreted through the body's waste. SmartLipo™ is performed under local anesthesia, and is highly effective for patients looking to remove small amounts of fat in localized areas. Laser liposuction has also been shown to tighten the skin, resulting in a smoother, more contoured appearance for our Los Angeles and Pasadena-area patients.
SmartLipo™ Laser Liposuction vs. Traditional Liposuction
 Dr. Michael Schwartz offers both traditional tumescent liposuction and the new SmartLipo™ laser liposuction at his Los Angeles-area office in Pasadena. During your consultation, Dr. Schwartz will discuss your plastic surgery options with you and help you determine what type of liposuction is right for you.
Unlike traditional liposuction, the new SmartLipo™ procedure is performed under local anesthesia, as opposed to general anesthesia, which means there are far less chances of complications during surgery. Research has shown that SmartLipo™ laser liposuction is also more comfortable than traditional liposuction because the laser seals blood vessels as it destroys fat cells, and therefore requires no stitches after the procedure. SmartLipo™ has also been shown to produce less bleeding, swelling, and bruising after surgery than traditional liposuction. The SmartLipo™ procedure produces few, if any, scars, improves skin drooping after surgery, and involves minimal downtime. Although SmartLipo™ is more comfortable than traditional liposuction, it may take longer to see optimal results. Patients may see some initial improvement in areas of localized fat, but the final results may take up to a year to be fully visible.
